Brief History

Kent Academy is a Christian, boarding primary school and is located in Miango, about 22 kilometers from Jos, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. It was named after one of the early SIM missionaries, Thomas Kent. Located on the plateau, the climate is mild and conducive to learning. The environment is serene. The area is surrounded by rocks and hills with a beautiful and natural landscape.

Our resolve in the nearest future is to restart erstwhile middle school (7th to 9th grades) and possibly upgrade to the 12th grade thereafter.

Today with an attendance of about 150 pupils in grades 1-6, KA serves church, government workers, and business families within and outside Nigeria. Kent Academy in central Nigeria is owned and operated by ECWA. Training is focused on giving children a firm foundation in the basics: Bible, Mathematics, Reading and Writing which are key to other subjects. The curriculum is internationally (North American) based. This, along with spiritual training in both the dorm and school, prepares children for life and learning.

Grounded in the word of God, KA educational philosophy aims to develop the whole individual. Art, Music, Language Arts, Science, Computer, Social Studies and Physical Education give balance in a well-rounded program. Parents and school seek to be partners as they encourage and guide the students.

The basic educational philosophy upon which Kent Academy was founded is rooted in the Biblical view of each person as created by God with certain potential abilities, which need to be developed for the glory of the Creator. It is the responsibility of the school in cooperation with parents to guide and encourage each student in developing his potential to its fullest extent.

The principles of life set forth in the Bible are the guidelines used by the Kent Academy Miango in working toward this end. Bible Knowledge is a very essential element at all levels of instruction in the classrooms and the dormitories. If they so desire, a student has the right to choose to become a Christian.

The Vision of Kent academy is to be an excellent Christian school in a conducive, learning environment where students are nurtured spiritually and academically to fulfill God’s purpose in the church and society.

The Mission of Kent Academy exists to provide a Christ-centered education by equipping the students through teaching, discipling, nurturing and networking for the glory of God. KA develops staff members for effective ministry in school and society.

Aims and Objectives: Education at Kent Academy is aimed at the development of the entire individual: spiritually, mentally, physically and socially.

Core Values

We value:

i. Christian ministry where there is spiritual discipline through prayer, memorizing, studying and applying God’s word;

ii. Relationships where there is trust, respect, understanding, support and love for one another

iii. A loving and caring community that believes in the worth and giftedness of each member;

John 13:34-35:  "Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for each other."

iv. Integrity in all spheres of life such as transparency, honesty, accountability and openness;

Micah 6:8: And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

v. Creativity based on God-given potentials and abilities

vi. Servant leadership that empowers, mentors, delegates and is exemplary;

Matt 20:26-28: Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

vii. Stewardship of God given resources – human and materials are harnessed for His glory and well-being of society.

viii. Capacity building of students and staff for effective service to God and humanity.

ix. Partnership and Networking for mutual benefits
